The Appleton City UPS Customer Service Desk will be permanently closed as of April 6, 2025.  Pre-packaged, pre-labeled shipments of an appropriate size may be inserted into the nearby drop box.  Packages for pickup will be routed to the nearest UPS Access Point location.  Packages requiring shipping labels or additional packing supplies may be dropped off or serviced at a nearby UPS full-service retail shipping location.

 

The Appleton City 2024-2025 Kindergarten Enrollment and Screenings will be held April 9. Call the Elementary Office, 660-476-2161, for an appointment. If your child will be 5 before August 1, now is the time to begin thinking about Kindergarten enrollment requirements. The following items are required for enrollment: immunization records, state issued birth certificate, social security card and proof of residence. Your child can receive the immunizations that are needed to attend Kindergarten anytime on or after his/her fourth birthday. You do not need to wait until age five. They encourage you to have your child fully immunized now and bring the immunization record to school on the day of Kindergarten screening.

Immaculate Conception Church final Lenten Fish Fry Dinner will be served April 4 from 5:00 – 7:30 p.m. in St. Mary’s School Hall, Montrose. They plan to serve dine-in and carry out. The menu is fried fish, Suzy Q’s, cole saw, corn bread, cookies and a drink. Adults eat for $12, children under 10 for $6. They are serving the best fish around!

 

The next free Diabetic Education Class will be 4:00 p.m. Thursday, April 10 at in the Ellett Memorial Hospital Conference Room. Reminder: you do not have to be diabetic to come to the class.

 

Children’s Center Casino Night is scheduled for April 5 at the Adrian Optimist Building.  A catered dinner will be from 5:30 – 7:00 p.m. Casino and mouse races from 7:00 – 9:30.  A raffle and auction will take place after the casino.  The cost is $35 per person. Tickets will be available at the door.  Proceeds benefit Children’s Center serving child abuse victims and their families in Bates, Henry and St. Clair Counties.

 

The next Meet Me On Main, Second Wednesday Shop and Stroll will be 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. April 9. The following businesses will be participating: Jina's Junque, Rural Roots, 3 Wishes, Red Door Salon, Floral & Boutique, 4th Street Fika, Half Baked Take & Bakery, Bluebird Lounge, Cork & Keg, and A.C.TNR.

 

The AC FFA will be holding their spring plant sale from April 14 until the end of school. The FFA greenhouse will be open for business from 7:45 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on any day school is in session. Just stop by the Ag Building for assistance. The FFA has garden vegetables and flowers for sale such as tomatoes and peppers as well as potting flowers like petunias, annual vinca, impatiens and geraniums. Flowers and vegetables can be purchased as packs, individuals or as hanging baskets. Photos and information about all the items available in the greenhouse are located on the school website as well as the Facebook pages. Costs are $2 packs, and $12/hanging basket or 3 hanging baskets for $30. For more information, feel free to give Mrs. Leiber a call at 660-424-3668.

 

The Knights of Columbus will have their monthly pancake and sausage breakfast at the Knight’s Hall in Montrose on Sunday, April 13 from 8:30 – 10:00 a.m.  Treat your family to a hot breakfast you don’t have to cook or clean up.  A free will donation will be greatly appreciated

 

Meet Me On Main for Hop and Shop will be Saturday, April 19, 2025, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The Easter Bunny will not only be hiding eggs in Forest Park for the kids that day, but rumor has it that he might even hop into the following participating businesses as well: Jina's Junque, Rural Roots, 3 Wishes, A.C. TNR, Red Door Salon, Floral, and Boutique, 4th Street Fika, Bluebird Lounge, and Cork & Keg.

 

The AC Spring City Wide Garage Sale dates are set for April 25-26. Permits are $5 and can be purchased at City Hall beginning Tuesday April 8 through noon on Wednesday April 23. Permits to set up in the AC Park are $25 for the pole shelter, $15 for the stage, $10 for lawn permits and these fees cover both days. Park permits can also be purchased at City Hall on a first come, first served basis and cannot be reserved by phone. Maps will be available at Food Fair, Casey's, Fika and Powell's True Value beginning Thursday afternoon, April 24. House of Joy Ministries are scheduled to be at the City Park, Saturday from 3:00-5:00 to pick up donations but may leave earlier if full. For questions, call Dianne Foster at 660-679-1125.

 

Montrose VFW Post 8820 offers the 2025 Poker Run on April 26. Pre-register now until April 7. $25 due at registration. $10 extra hand. Registration on the day of is 11:30 a.m. till 1:00 p.m. First car leaves out at noon. Proceeds go to building repairs. URGENT NOTICE: Due to the heavy rain this morning. All residents south of the Butler Waste Water Treatment Plant. There is a possible contamination of water in the mound branch. This does NOT affect the drinking water. Crews are actively working on the situation. Once again, this does not affect the drinking water.



BCCHF Scholarships

 The Bates County Community Health Foundation (BCCHF) is pleased to announce that applications are now being accepted for the BCCHF Health Care Scholarship. This $1,000 scholarship is awarded annually to Bates County residents who are pursuing a career in health care.

The scholarship is entirely funded through the foundation’s fundraising efforts and is designed to support students who have been accepted into an accredited health care program.

BCCHF Health Care Scholarship Criteria

To be eligible for the BCCHF Health Care Scholarship, applicants must meet the following criteria:

·       Reside in Bates County

·       Pursuing a career in the health care field

·       Accepted into a chosen health care program

·       Maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0 (provide a copy of transcript)

·       Demonstrate strong communication skills

·       Submit an essay explaining why they are pursuing a career in health care

·       Provide three letters of recommendation

Applications must be submitted no later than May 23, 2025.

Storm damages homes & businesses in Nevada, Mo.

 Strong storms rolled through the Nevada, Mo., area on Wednesday morning, April 2nd. The National Weather Service issued a Tornado Warning for the storm that hit around 7:30 a.m. The storm damaged homes and businesses in the Nevada, Mo., area. A video showed damage at a motel on Austin Boulevard near U.S. 54. The video also showed debris scattered in the parking lot. A tornado was unofficially reported to 92.1 FM from a caller near the New Holland dealership there in Nevada. Authorities have not reported any serious injuries from the storm at this time.



Geneva Hough Zinn, age 84 of Butler

 Geneva Hough Zinn, age 84, of Butler, MO, passed away Tuesday, April 1, 2025 at her daughter's home in Butler. Funeral services are pending and will be announced by the Schowengerdt Funeral Chapel.

Clinton Quilt Walk April 4th and 5th

 Quilting Lovers will want to attend the Clinton Quilt Walk on April 4th and 5th. The White Flower Quilt Shop and Clinton Main Street will host the 6th Annual Quilt Walk. Quilts will be on display in downtown Clinton stores and businesses and they will collect the free Quilt Patterns offered. The quest speaker will be Judy Wompler at the free program each day at 11 am. She will be telling stories told in the Laura Engels Wilder Books. Plus The Clinton Museum will hold a bed turning. That’s the Clinton Quilt Walk April 4th and 5th in Clinton.



Two Dead In Garden City, Missouri, House Fire

Two people were found dead following a late-night house fire in rural Garden City. The Cass County Sheriff's Department and the Garden City Fire Department were dispatched to a home on South O’Bannon Road at approximately 10:47 p.m. Sunday, March, 30th.

When first responders arrived, they found the residence fully engulfed in flames and heavy smoke, making it impossible for deputies to enter the home. Emergency Medical Services and fire crews worked quickly to battle the blaze.

Once the fire was brought under control, firefighters discovered two deceased individuals inside the residence.

The Missouri State Fire Marshal and the Cass County Fire Investigation Team are investigating the cause of the fire.

The East Lynne Fire Department, Creighton Fire Department, Harrisonville Fire Department, and the Central Cass Fire Protection District also responded to the scene to assist in the effort.

The victims identities have not been released.
