Relay for Life 2018  “ Stomp Out Cancer “ will hit the Butler Square on June 2nd… the event kicks off at 4 pm with music, food booths, scheduled activities and the traditional sale of Luminaires. The 2018 goal is set for $42,000 and all year Relay for Life Teams have been holding events to raise funds to meet this goal.

The dollars you spend at food booths and the purchase of luminaries will be donated to the American Cancer Association. We hope you attend the Butler Relay for Life Celebration this June 2nd on the Butler Square. Bring a lawn chair and enjoy the evening.

The reading of the Luminaries in memory of a loved one that lost the battle or in memory of a loved one fighting the battle will be read during the evening, at the top of the hour. Join the Annual Relay for Life Celebration June 2nd on the Butler Square. All activities start at 4 pm.

PBS’ National Memorial Day Concert Broadcasts Live In Honor of 150th Anniversary of Memorial Day

WASHINGTON, DC – On the 150th Anniversary of Memorial Day, PBS’ multi award-winning National Memorial Day Concert returns live from the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol hosted by Tony Award Winner Joe Mantegna and Emmy Award Winner Gary Sinise.  The 29th annual broadcast of the National Memorial Day Concert airs live on PBS on Sunday, May 27th from 8pm to 9:30pm before a concert audience of hundreds of thousands, millions more at home, and the United State troops serving around the world on the American Forces Network.

A 29-year tradition unlike anything else on television, America’s national night of remembrance takes us back to the real meaning of the holiday through personal stories interwoven with musical performances.  This year’s program features the following stories:

Emmy, Golden Globe, and SAG Award nominated actor John Corbett from My Big Fat Greek Wedding and – star of Chicago Med – Brian Tee will help tell the story of Joe Annello and Hiroshi “Hershey” Miyamura. Annello and Miyamura were dear friends who helped each other survive during the deadly combat during the Korean War.

To mark the 70th anniversary of the Women’s Armed Services Integration Act, the concert will pay tribute to the contributions of women in our military throughout history, including the story of Silver Star recipient Leigh Ann Hester, the first 1st woman to receive the Silver Star for combat. This segment will feature Academy Award, Golden Globe, and Emmy Award winning actress Allison Janney from I, Tonya, Mom, and The West Wing and Tony nominated actress and star of TV’s Falling Water, The West Wing, and Loaded Mary McCormack.

Academy Award, Golden Globe and Emmy Award-winning actress Allison Janney will host a tribute to women in the military on PBS’ National Memorial Day Concert.

This year also marks the 50th anniversary of the Battle of Khe Sanh, one of the fiercest battles of the Vietnam War. PBS’ National Memorial Day Concert will feature the story of Bill Rider, who was part of the battalion known as “The Walking Dead.” Bill’s story will focus on his return home to fight a different war…that of post-traumatic stress. As part of his healing process, Bill found a way to pay it forward by dedicating his life to helping generations of service men and women who have experienced the trauma of war. Bill’s story will be told by Academy Award nominated actor Graham Greene from Dances with Wolves and Wind River.

2018 marks the 150th anniversary of Memorial Day, originally known as Decoration Day and first commemorated at Arlington National Cemetery.

Bates County Memorial Hospital Employee of the Month – May 2018

Dana Robertson is recognized as the Bates County Memorial Hospital’s Employee of the Month for May 2018.

Dana began her employment at Bates County Memorial Hospital in June of 2009. She works full time as a medical assistant in the Nursery Street Family Care Clinic. In addition to her regular clinic laboratory duties, Dana also assists in rooming patients, cleans treatment rooms, answers any questions, teaches other staff on proper procedures and new processes.

Dana is regarded by her coworkers as someone who is always willing to help others, and she is often complimented by patients for her blood drawing skills. Dana always has a smile and pleasant greeting for everyone, and she is an asset to Bates County Memorial Hospital and their patients.

McCarthy Transferred to Jackson County

According to Henry County Sheriff Kent Oberkrom, Ian James McCarthy was transferred on Tuesday, May 1, 2018 to the custody of the Jackson County Jail in Kansas City, Missouri.

McCarthy’s criminal case was transferred to Jackson County a few weeks ago on a change of venue.  “State law provides for the housing of inmates in the county where the venue is changed to for the purposes of trial”, Sheriff Oberkrom said.

Ian James McCarthy was one of the suspects in the shooting and death of Clinton Officer Gary Michael. McCarthy was charged on August 7, 2017 with Count I Class A Felony Murder 1st Degree and Count II Class U Felony Armed Criminal Action.
