Butler: Old Settler’s Day Meeting and Meal August 28th First Christian church

The Old Settler’s Day Reunion will be celebrated in Butler as two separate activities on Wednesday, August 28th .

The recognition and prizes will be awarded to the oldest man and woman born in Bates County, the oldest in attendance, and couples that have been married the longest and still living in Bates County. These people will be recognized and awarded prizes in their honor. Antiques will be on display at the Old Butler High School with registration at noon, and the meeting will convene at 1:00 pm. The building is now air-conditioned and handicapped accessible on the west side of the building.

The Guest Speaker will be Peggy Buhr of the Bates County Museum.

The event is also tied in the with Annual “Old Settler’s Day Dinner”, which is served by the ladies of the First Christian Church in Butler. The annual chicken pot pie dinner was founded by the late Cleta York of Butler, on the best cooks in the Bates County Area. The Annual “Old Settler’s Day Dinner” is an awaited event by the public and is a yearly activity for the ladies of the First Christian Church. Proceeds are used as a fundraising event for Children’s Mercy Hospital and various service projects for the community.

The dinner is held in August and will be on the calendar this year on Wednesday, August 28th .  This fundraising event will include chicken pot pie, mashed potatoes, gravy, and homemade rolls to include homemade pie for a cost of $12.00  per plate.

The meal is fit for a king and will be served by the First Christian Church ladies. They will begin serving at 11:00 am and will serve until the food is all gone. The dinner will take place in the basement of the church and dining or carry-out is available. The ladies request that you enter the church basement by the west doors.

The Old Settlers Reunion will be held at the old Butler High School building on Pine Street in Butler, and it is open to the public. The building is handicap-accessible by entering the northwest corner of the building.

The Bates County Commission Reaches Determination on CAFO’s

The Bates County Commission has made their determination on the request to enact a local county ordinance prior to August 28, 2019 dealing with proposed Confined Animal Feeding Operations (CAFO).
The decision made unanimously was not to put such an ordinance into effect at this time.
Last week a public informational meeting at the Commission chambers was held to allow public input and get information and answers to specific concerns from stakeholders involved in a proposed CAFO west and south of Rich Hill. That meeting is available to review by going to the following link.
