Bates County Fair BBQ Cpmpetition Information

Event Updates for BCCHF / Bates County Fair BBQ Competition

This year at the Bates County Fair, on July 13-16, the Bates County Community Health Foundation (BCCHF) and the Bates County Fair Board are teaming up to present the first annual Smokin’ in the Electric City BBQ Competition. The Kansas City Barbecue Society-sanctioned event will take place at the Bates County Fair during fair week. Proceeds from the Smokin’ in the Electric City BBQ will be donated to BCCHF to benefit and raise awareness for the Proposed Regional Activity Center.

The foundation is seeking sponsors for the competition and craft vendors for Saturday and Sunday. The first annual Smokin’ in the Electric City BBQ competition is also part of a Triple Crown event.

BBQ Events

The competition features KCBS team events, two classes and several events for the public: a Dessert Category and a Kids Q.

Kids Q takes place on Friday, July 14 and is open to ages 5-15. Parents are advised that contestants for the Kids Q will be required to attend a cooks meeting at 3:00 p.m. on Friday. KCBS rules will apply.

Those entering the dessert category are requested to make an extra dessert to be used for a Benefit Auction for the Proposed Regional Activity Center. Help support by attending the benefit auction on July 16 starting at 3:30 pm, followed by the awards ceremony.

Team sign-ups are open! Sign up forms and a detailed list of events are listed below for the Smokin’ in the Electric City BBQ Competition.

The Extras

The Foundation will also host a Classic Car Cruise at the Fair on Saturday, July 15, from 3-6 pm. No fees will be collected for the Cruise, but we encourage participants to attend the Benefit Dinner at 6 pm.

Plans for the weekend include a “leftovers table” – be sure to follow Smokin’ in the Electric City on Facebook to get that information as soon as it is announced!

One of the KCBS judges is one of our own, Dr. James Patterson, a family medicine physician with Family Care Clinics. He and his wife recently became certified KCBS judges and are excited to participate in an event that benefits their own community. Other judges and teams are coming to Butler from near and far.

Triple Crown

Smokin’ in the Electric City is part one of a “Triple Crown Event” for the State of Missouri. Each event benefits local fundraisers in their communities.

Teams competing in these KCBS-sanctioned events will receive more points toward attending the American Royal World Series of Barbecue.  The championship will be determined by taking each team’s highest three total scores from the three events. The advantage would be to cook all three events to win the overall Triple Crown Championship.

The second event for the Triple Crown will be Smokin’ on the Osage in Osceola Mo., taking place on July 21-23. Learn more.

The third and Final event will be Boo-B-Que held in Lees Summit, Mo., October 29-31, and triple crown winners will be announced at this event. Learn more.
