Missouri History Commemoration Events on September 18th
Dear Citizens: Missouri Bicentennial observances will continue into the Fall 2021 as we celebrate Missouri’s birthday as a state. An area commemoration event will be held at the Battle of Island Mound State Historic Site on Saturday, September 18th, located at 4837 NW County Road 1002, west of Butler, MO. Event time is 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Planned activities include live stage performances, a living history walking loop and other Civil War themed events. Attendees will see a presentation of the Buffalo soldiers and a first-person portrayal of Lt. Patrick Minor, an officer who successfully led the Union artillery unit during the Battle of Westport. The living history loop will feature a rope-making demonstration, a bison program, a Missouri German carpenter’s display and much more. Participating organizations will include the Fort Scott National Historic Site and the Bates County Museum.
The event is free and open to the public. Certainly, a wonderful learning experience for our students studying Missouri history this year. This is at one of the two state park sites located in our 126th District. For more information, call 417-276-4259.
