CAPITOL REPORT: REPRESENTATIVE PATRICIA PIKE

Missouri History Commemoration Events on September 18th

Dear Citizens: Missouri Bicentennial observances will continue into the Fall 2021 as we celebrate Missouri’s birthday as a state. An area commemoration event will be held at the Battle of Island Mound State Historic Site on Saturday, September 18th, located at 4837 NW County Road 1002, west of Butler, MO.  Event time is 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Planned activities include live stage performances, a living history walking loop and other Civil War themed events.  Attendees will see a presentation of the Buffalo soldiers and a first-person portrayal of Lt. Patrick Minor, an officer who successfully led the Union artillery unit during the Battle of Westport.  The living history loop will feature a rope-making demonstration, a bison program, a Missouri German carpenter’s display and much more.  Participating organizations will include the Fort Scott National Historic Site and the Bates County Museum.

The event is free and open to the public. Certainly, a wonderful learning experience for our students studying Missouri history this year. This is at one of the two state park sites located in our 126th District.  For more information, call 417-276-4259.

As part of Missouri’s statewide bicentennial celebration, the Governor’s Office will also be hosting a Bicentennial Inaugural Parade in Jefferson City on Saturday, September 18, 2021, at 10 a.m. to showcase Missouri’s past, present, and future. The Governor’s website states, “The Bicentennial Inaugural Parade will celebrate the swearing-in of Missouri’s elected officials from this year’s Bicentennial Inauguration as well as highlight the history and significance of the state of Missouri.

The parade will be livestreamed on Governor Parson’s Facebook Page with two emcees announcing each piece of the parade LIVE.

The Missouri State Capitol will feature various community engagement items on display from 8:00 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, September 18, including the following:

  • Missouri professional sports championship trophies (Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl trophies, Kansas City Royals World Series trophies, St. Louis Cardinals World Series trophies, and a St. Louis Blues Stanley Cup replica trophy)
  • Missouri Bicentennial Quilt
  • Missouri State Parks Quilt
  • Missouri Bicentennial Mural

The Bicentennial Inaugural Ballwill be held that evening outside on the Missouri State Capitol North Lawn and will feature live music and a fireworks display. All guests who plan to attend the Bicentennial Inaugural Ball are asked to RSVP using the link at https://governor.mo.gov/bicentennial-celebrations.”
