Senior centers still seeking nominations for Outstanding Older Adult Awards
Care Connection for Aging Services’ 21 senior centers are seeking nominations for Outstanding Older Adult Awards as part of Older Americans Month in May.
This year’s national OAM theme, “Make Your Mark,” highlights older adults’ unique and lasting contributions to their communities—from sharing a story with grandchildren to leaving a legacy of community action.
Older adults make their marks every day as volunteers, employees, employers, parents, grandparents, mentors, and advocates. They offer their time, talents, and experience to the benefit of their communities.
Even as the Coronavirus forced our 22 locations to close to the public, the agency’s senior center staff members have continued to notice the ways in which older adults care for others in the community and for each other.
“While our centers have been closed, volunteer drivers have delivered meals to the homebound,” said Diana Hoemann, Care Connection Executive Director. “Many of those folks are older adults but nonetheless continued to deliver meals when our homebound clients need them more than ever. We also have relied on volunteers to provide telephone reassurances and advisory guidance to our center staff.”
For 57 years, Older Americans Month has been a time to recognize contributions such as these. Led by the Administration for Community Living (ACL) each May, OAM also provides resources to help older Americans stay healthy and independent, and materials to help communities support and celebrate their citizens.
