Care Connection to offer Zoom-based EnhanceFitness course free in January

Care Connection for Aging Services is enrolling older adults in a free EnhanceFitness course scheduled for January.

The course, which has been proven to get results, will be taught live on Zoom from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays through April.  If you want to join but need some help with Zoom, Care Connection offers free tutorials and one-on-one help getting online on a smartphone, desktop, laptop, or tablet.

“I truly believe that staying active and moving are important, no matter what age you are,” said Teresa Romanowicz, Care Connection’s Director of Supportive Services, who will teach the course. “If you have never exercised before, you can always start where you are.”

The class is designed to be relaxed and includes a full hour of fun, dynamic cardiovascular exercise, strength training, balance, and flexibility.

“Rather than just going for a walk, we offer a fun atmosphere. We try to have lively music. Music helps people to move and feel good. The class has all the fitness components in it. The benefits will be increased muscle strength and balance over time,” Romanowicz said. “Doing it through Zoom, you can join safely in your home and still participate with other people.”

EnhanceFitness helps older adults at all fitness levels become more active, energized, and empowered to live independently.

A typical class includes: a five-minute warm-up, 20-minute aerobic workout, five-minute cool-down, 20-minute strength training workout with soft cuff weights on the arms and legs, and 10 minutes of stretching. The course incorporates balance exercises throughout.

EnhanceFitness has been proven to improve physical function, decrease depression, protect against falls, promote social interaction and a physically active lifestyle, reduce medical care costs, and decrease hospitalizations.

The course will start with a three-part fitness check so that participants can test their strength, balance and walking skills before they begin. The same timed test will illustrate the results at the close of the course.
