David Rawls Clayton was born in Leesburg, Florida at high noon on September 20, 1938. He was a pioneer in drag racing and has his team’s car, and pictures in the Don Garlits museum. David was a proud US Airforce veteran of 11 years. He lied about his age so he could join the National Guard. He told them he was born in 1933 when he was really born in 1938. David worked for The Seaboard Airline Railroad in Florida and was the 18th family member to do so. He moved the family to Kansas City to join TWA and became a Licensed Aircraft Mechanic then became union steward. While at TWA he testified in Washington DC at the First Biannual Review of the Federal Rules and Regulations for Aircraft Mechanics. He became a crash scene investigator after attending the NTSB school in Oklahoma City. David retired after 30 years. After retirement he and a friend rebuilt a Cessna O-2A. They flew all over the mid-west performing at air shows for fun. He also won the Silver Wrench award at the Oshkosh air show. David was a survivor. He survived getting crushed, he came back from heart problems & he was a 20 year survivor of Pancreatic Cancer! He was a strong man that could only be beaten by old age. Many words have been used to describe David. He was so much to so many. He was Son, Husband, Father, he was teacher, advisor, role model, story teller, memory maker, peace maker, wise man, protector, provider, innovator, racer, rebel and a pioneer. He was a strong man who loved God, his family and friends unconditionally and without judgment, mechanics and music. His freely given love, knowledge and guidance will truly be missed.
He was preceded in death by his sister Sherry (Clayton) Milliner, brother Lee Clayton, his parents Julia (Jaudon) (McKenzie) & Buron Leroy (Bill) Clayton, brother Elliott Clayton. He leaves behind his loving and devoted wife of nearly 66 years, Barbara (Sandra) (Lanyon) Clayton, 5 children: David (Ricky) Clayton (Carol), Debbie (Ted Kasper), Valerie (Norman Ingram), Rozlind (Jason Keehler), Shaun (Clayton) Boehm & 1 brother Kenneth Clayton. He has 9 Grandchildren, 16 Great Grandchildren and 2 Great Great Grandchildren.
