Appleton City Rural Health Clinic and Ellett Memorial Hospital will sponsor a Community Health Outreach on Thursday, June 10th from 2pm to 4pm.  They are offering free blood pressure and glucose checks in the community rooms of Beech Street Apartments from 2pm to 2:45pm and 3pm to 4pm at Hickory Court Apartments.  Please call 660-476-2111 with any questions.

Appleton City June Second Saturdays will be held on Main Street Saturday, June 12th from 5pm to 8pm.  There will also be a BBQ Contest during this event. The monthly Men’s Fellowship Breakfast at the Appleton City Church of God will be at 7am on Saturday, June 12th.  All the men of the community are invited to join them for a time of great food and fellowship. Brent Bland will have a short devotional. 

The Knights of Columbus will resume their monthly pancake and sausage breakfast at the Knight’s Hall in Montrose on Sunday, June 13 from 8:30 – 10:00 a.m.  Treat your family to a hot breakfast you don’t have to cook or clean up.  A free will donation will be greatly appreciated.

Five area churches are teaming together to present a community Vacation Bible School on July 12th through July 16th from 6pm to 8pm each evening. They invite all kids ages 3 years old through 6th grade to join them on this “Journey with Jesus”.  Each church will host an evening: Trinity UMC on Monday, Rockville UMC on Tuesday, Church of God on Wednesday, River of Life on Thursday, Christian Church on Friday. Trinity Lutheran Church will hold their annual Vacation Bible School Monday, July 5th and Tuesday, July 6th

West Central Missouri Community Action Agency’s Senior Care found a way to encourage safe socialization during the midst of a pandemic.   COVID-19 enhanced the isolation and loneliness that many seniors experience.  Senior Care Pen Pals are matched with other seniors that have similar likes and hobbies.   Writing kits are provided and include all the necessary items to become successful writing companions.   Kits include stationery, note cards, all occasion greeting cards, ink pens, motivational quotes to share and postage stamps.   If you are 65 and older and are interested in learning how to become a Senior Care Pen Pal, please contact Senior Care staff at 660-476-2185.

In conjunction with the Appleton City Sesquicentennial Celebration and the congregation’s Sesquicentennial (+1), Trinity Lutheran Church will be sponsoring a Quilt Show at the church and is inviting area quilters to participate.  The Quilt Show will be Friday, August 13th and Saturday, August 14th during the Sesquicentennial.  Included in the show will be hand-quilted, machine-quilted, embroidered, appliquéd, and baby quilts, and wall hangings. If your quilt, either old or newer, has an interesting story with it, also plan on sharing that with the public. The show pre-registration begins now and ends Friday, June 30th. At this time, one (1) item can be registered per entry.  After June 30, depending on responses, the registration may be opened up again to include more available spaces at the show.  A $25 prize will be awarded in each category and a $50 “People’s Choice” Award. The Appleton City Public Library is seeking assistance with teachers for their Summer Reading Program. The program will take place on Tuesdays in June (June 15th, June 22nd, and June 29th) as well as on Tuesday, July 6th from 11am to 12pm (noon). The teacher would need to read a couple books with the children as well as assist them in completing a corresponding activity. All materials will be provided. The Appleton City Fair/Sesquicentennial will be held Thursday, August 12th through Sunday, August 15th.  Most previous events are in the planning and a tentative schedule will be released. A new carnival was able to be secured. The original carnival was cancelled due to the death of the owner.  Start making your SQC outfits.  One major change is the parade will be late Saturday afternoon. 

Free private tennis lessons are offered to all current or former players and anyone who want to improve their technique or strategies or first time players.   People of almost any age and skills can learn to play tennis.  Lessons are held at the tennis courts at Donnohue-Dugan Park and started the week of May 24th.  Rackets and balls will be provided.  To set up appointments for your private lessons, or if you have questions, call Dennis Dunham at 476-2151 or 476-5514 or Tommy Payton at 816-863-6624. Open tennis is every day 8am to 8pm. Tennis is exercise that is fun!
